The alignment of planets is an astronomical
phenomenon where planets appear to be forming a cluster or a straight line when
viewed from earth. While perfect alignments are rare due to the tilted orbits
of planets, near alignments or groupings occur more regularly.
Ancient civilizations, like the Mayans,
Babylonians and ancient Chinese astronomers tracked these events which resulted
in the association of natural disasters, changes in rulers and omens.
"February 5, 1962": It was
believed that seven closely aligned planets, which were Mercury, Venus, Earth,
Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and the Moon, was a bad omen. In reality, no disastrous
events took place.
“May 5, 2000" fueled apocalyptic
predictions, but nothing catastrophic happened after the alignment of eight
planets, which included the Sun, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus and Mercury.
December 21, 2020 was the exceptional date
when a brilliant double star was sighted. It was the day Jupiter and Saturn had
their ‘Great Conjunction’. This was subsequently titled "Christmas
Star".
Some events shape the personalities of
people, like the planetary position during their birth. These beliefs are
influenced by astrology and are known as alignments.
In the beginning of 2025, sky watchers will
be lucky to witness a series of remarkable planetary alignments:
In January of 2025 up to February, six
planets: Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune will align in the
evening sky. The time from sunset to 9:30 PM local time will be the best for
viewing.
Key Dates include:
January 21: Jupiter and Venus will be
observable in the dimmer evening sky.
February 1: Venus will be positioned
closely to the crescent moon.
This alignment will serve to enhance the
brightness of Mars, making it appear larger.
February 28, 2025: Seven Planet Alignment.
On the 28th of February, there will be a
phenomenon that involves seven planets: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, and Neptune. This configuration differs from the rest and is called the
Great Conjunction since it has not occurred within 100 years and will not occur
again until the year of 2492. For the best results:
Timing: Right after the sun sets.
Visibility: Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Venus,
and Saturn are easily visible, while Uranus and Neptune will be a little more
difficult to see and will require special equipment.
Future Planetary Alignments
Most Notable Upcoming Events:
In April of 2040, Mercury, Venus, Mars,
Jupiter and Saturn will align in such a way that they will be visible from
Earth and will create a rare, arc-like shape across the sky.
In March of 2080, Jupiter and Saturn will
come into close alignment again, much like the 2020 event of Great Conjunction.
In 2492, all eight planets (Mercury, Venus,
Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) will be occasionally
aligned, which is a rarely observed phenomenon.
Viewing Tips
Location: Away from the hustle and bustle
of the city to avoid obstruction from buildings and light.
Equipment: Although some of the planets
will be visible without the use of optics aids, watching through binoculars or
a telescope will make the experience more memorable, especially for the harder
to spot planets.
Timing: The best observation time would be
right after the sun sets when the sky has darkened but the planets can still be
seen above the horizon.
All celestial phenomena provide the chance
for the public to view the solar system in motion. If you are a new astronomer
